2011 Tumwater Hill by Evelyn

This is a city bus light trail passing through the street. F36, 1 sec, 140mm

Crap, it was a cold, windy, rainy morning... but Terri and I were committed to execute our mission. Ready to roll at 8 a.m., ready to leave at 9 a.m. I love field trips and the way we learn from each other... the best part was just being out there figuring stuff out on the fly.. rain sleeves, timers, exposures, apertures, shutter speeds... all while fingers are frozen stiff. Yea, love it! well, sorta...

Field Trip to Tumwater Hill - Terri Perkins

05 January 2011

It was a cold, wet, blustery morning. Mt. Rainier was nowhere in sight, but the capitol was visible. Despite the cold, Evelyn and I had a fun time shooting in the rain. We both learned how to deploy our rain-sleeves (and oh what invaluable and inexpensive items those are!).

Had to defrost ourselves at Barnes & Noble with Hot tea and coffee, browsed through photo books at the bookstore and then tried out some lenses and pestered the guy at Kits cameras with our questions. It was a very good morning!

Balance & Texture -- Terri Perkins

This holiday season was wonderful and crazy busy, but I did manage to capture some images of a few of our resident flamingos -- who migrate around on our property (and sometimes into our neighbors fields!)

I love the texture of the grass and water as well as the reflections. I believe that the upper image shows asymmetrical balance -- what do you think?

Christmas doll

This is from today's portrait session with this little Christmas Princess. I had to share it because I love the textures of her dress along with her smooth porcelain skin.

"Taz" -- Terri Perkins

I just wanted to share an image of "Taz" and the email that I received from his loving owner. He will be missed very much.

Hi Terri: thanks for the photos of Taz. When Ki gets home, I'll show those great shots; I'm sure she'll appreciate them even more when Taz has to leave us. I took him out for a potty break today and, after doing his stuff, he wouldn't take a step to go anywhere. I had to carry his back body/legs to get him to move forward. He's a great and loving fellow.

Space, Proportion, Emphasis/Dominance Suzanne

Out of the many images shot this week, I picked these three to illustrate seeing creatively the space, proportion and emphasis themes this week.  The first illustrating space shows two polar bears touching noses - the main subject, the mistletoe - a sort of mid ground and then the blue sky the background.  I find this image makes me smile as it signifies the importance of contact for both humans and animals and the introduction of mistletoe as a human tradition gives a bit of humor to the shot.

Proportion comes in many forms and for this one I liked the contrast of the fraying threads to the smooth surface of the ornament, as well as the contrasting colors.  Here again, space interacts with proportion with the frayed ends coming to the fore, the ornament being more mid ground and the negative space being the background.

Emphasis or dominance is a state of tension - in this case between the green glittery diamond shapes and the recessed red shinny ones.  Who likes which one best?

Emotion: "mamas save their babies" by Evelyn

This was taken at the tornado aftermath. I wish it has been sharper, but I do like the emotion it evokes. To me, I see a mom evacuating with her daughter in the rain, who in turn saves her 'babies'.

Two Sunrises (Emotion/Space) - Chuck

Here are two sunrise shots of Mt. Rainier taken from my inlaws' house. The first I took recently, and the second was last summer. Do they invoke different emotions?

Emotion - Chuck

Beach sunsets always make me feel warm and fuzzy...

"Dominance" (pun intended) - Chuck

I think the pseudo "fish eye" distortion adds to the sense of space in this shot.
f/2.6, shutter 1/144, ISO-144, focal length 8mm

Space - Chuck

I don't know why exactly, but I LOVE shooting barns...
f/11, shutter 1/200, ISO-160, focal length 50mm

Emphasis/Space - Chuck

f/11, Shutter 1/100, ISO-100, Focal length 19mm. To me, in this shot the "picture frame" becomes the emphasis.

Henry "In the Distance"

Movement strongly implied with the signs barking orders, and the curives, ciorcles, slope of road along with the street lights showing the orderly way to go.

"striking hues and beauty" by Evelyn

I wasn't able to post last week so I am including four posts this week. I wanted to include this one because of the great hues. This was an employee at a Moroccan restaurant and I asked her if I could take some shots of her because she was striking! She is showing a tagine pot, used for cooking. The cover is designed to promote the return of all condensation to the bottom. With the cover removed, the base can be taken to the table for serving.

Emphasis: "dishes, dishes" by Evelyn

I loved this display in the kitchen of Pittock Mansion in Portland. My eye first saw the stack of plates, then my eye was next drawn to the sink with the other items. There was no flash allowed -- there was a light fixture behind the plates and by simply moving my body I was able to backlight the object of focus without getting the bright light in the picture. I had to crop the top a bit so the hardware of the light fixture wasn't in the photo.
f/5, 1/50, no flash

Space "Tornado" by Evelyn

I was drawn to this sign still standing in front of the T.G. Nichols Plumbing building in Aumsville after the tornado. The tornado destroyed the front and east walls of this building, but the sign was still standing, where it used to be, in front of the building. My intent was to draw an illusion of depth to draw the eye into the rest of the picture, which tells another story.
f 4.5, 1/100, ISO 250, no flash

Proportion/Scale "Horse Barn" by Evelyn

I like the composition of this photo because it shows depth and because of the low light it decreases detail and color, which add to the 3D illusion. There were a few things I would have liked to change... low light in the barn (high ISO), which added more noise to this photo. It wasn't a posed shot so I snapped fast, realizing later I could have lowered my shutter speed and ISO which could have resulted in less noise. But with a higher ISO I think the outside light would have added too much light to the photo. I couldn't use flash because of the horses in the stalls, but I like it better non flash.

SPACE -- Terri Perkins

I tried to show a visible foreground (trees), middle ground (clouds) and background (Mount Rainier) to illustrate SPACE. In order to increase the mood and make a bolder image I zoomed in and switched my picture control to landscape -- bringing out the blues and greens in this image.

Nikon D90, f/11, 1/250 sec, ISO 200, no flash

Proportion/Scale -- Terri Perkins

I took these photos early in the morning over at McChord. "Tazz" the Malamute in the foreground helps to show the proportional size of these planes (see the picture below). In order to show some emotional appeal I zoomed in and was able to capture the reflection of the sunrise over Mount Rainier in the nose of the plane. I love this effect! Nikon D90, f/5.60, 1/200 sec, ISO 200, no flash

I've learned that it's important to take a look around and behind you when practicing photography. I was so captivated by the beauty of Mount Rainier that I almost missed this shot -- which was directly behind me.

Emphasis/Dominance -- Terri Perkins

These were taken during our hunt for the perfect Christmas tree! I was trying to establish the focal point as my shadow. By adding the red Santa hat I was able to capture a more playful mood and better tell the story.

Motion!

Since I had to miss the field trip to go to my son's wrestling tournament, I had to find my motion there... not too hard in a gym full of wrestling. This throw had some nice motion in it, but I'm not fond of the wrestler in the background with his hands... well, you can see for yourself! If I had time I would clone him out!

Suzanne - Moving? Who is moving?

I did not care much for any of my images from Saturday's shoot at the Capitol, but had fun with this one.  Shot at f 5.6, ISO 200, 170mm, using flash and for 0.66s with moving the camera to create light trails.  This technique is often used when using the continuous firing mode, but I just did the one.
